Legendary actor Gene Hackman has passed away at 95, along with his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, 63.
Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed the couple was found deceased in their Santa Fe home. While the cause of death remains unknown, authorities have stated that foul play is not suspected. Their pet dog was also found dead.
Mendoza declined to comment on the time of death but noted, “We’re in the middle of a preliminary death investigation, awaiting approval for a search warrant.”
Hackman, widely regarded as one of Hollywood’s greatest actors, is best known for his roles in The French Connection, Unforgiven, and as Lex Luthor in Superman. Over his career spanning more than 100 roles, he won two Academy Awards and secured his place in cinematic history.
Despite his success, Hackman valued his privacy. In 2004, he announced his retirement, stating, “I haven’t held a press conference, but yes, I’m not going to act any longer. I really don’t want to do it anymore.”
Hackman and Arakawa met in the mid-1980s and married in 1991. Addressing past rumors, he once clarified, “I did not leave my real-life wife for a younger woman. We just drifted apart. In this business, marriage takes a great deal of work and love.”
Fans have taken to social media to pay tribute to the beloved actor and his wife. One user wrote, “RIP Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa—an end of an era in cinema.” Another added, “Honoring their memory. Their impact on film and music will not be forgotten.”
The loss of Gene Hackman marks the passing of a true Hollywood legend, leaving behind an indelible legacy.
