Authorities confirmed that Day died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound around 6:00 a.m. local time. Police stated there was no indication of foul play and emphasized that the incident occurred well before students arrived on campus.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, students, and faculty affected by this heartbreaking event,” the department said in a statement. Officials also announced that the school would be closed for the remainder of the day as the investigation continued.

Following the tragic news, tributes poured in from those who knew and admired Day.

“He always tried to make everyone happy,” one person wrote online.

“He was a great guy—always joking and laughing,” shared another, who said they worked alongside him for a decade. “Lots of memories. He will be truly missed by many.”

Tipton County Schools also expressed their condolences, calling Day a “highly respected and valued member” of the school community.

“As we mourn this tragic loss, we offer prayers and condolences to Mr. Day’s loved ones, his friends, and the entire staff and student body of Munford High School,” the Tipton County Board of Education shared in a statement.
